Holland boxer Johnny Garcia is busy these days, working two jobs, being a husband and a father and training as a professional boxer.
He is finding as he tries to move up the pro ranks that he needs to spend more honing his boxing skills.
The 30-year-old is leaving next week to work out at Wild Card Gym in California that is run by well-respected trainer Freddie Roach. Roach is most known for his work with Manny Pacquiao.
?It?s a great opportunity,? Garcia said. ?My friend and sponsor Roy McCammon and I have been talking after the last fight. I?m working two jobs, doing everything the hard way. The people I?m fighting are training eight hours a day. That?s all they do. That?s their job. I?m kind of at a disadvantage.?
Garcia suffered his first professional loss in November, getting knocked out by Cuban native Angelo Santana. Garcia is 13-1.
Garcia said he has received offers to fight on TV again, but turned them down. He also had a chance to sign with a national promoter.
Garcia is hoping to turn the four-to-six weeks he will spend in California as a springboard.
?We believe the training and sparring?there will help Johnny take the next step in his boxing career,? McCammon said. ?The training there is world class, and he will be learning from the best of the best. Our goal is to get him signed with a major promoter, so that he can build his record and not take all of the fights as the underdog.?
McCammon, a Holland business owner, and his wife are holding a going-away gathering on Saturday, so that fans can meet with Garcia.
The event at McCammon?s Holland Cakery & Sweets in Holland Township will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Prizes will be given away, including a pair of boxing gloves signed by Garcia. Proceeds from the event will help Garcia pay for his training, said McCammon, who also owns West Michigan Transport.
?Imagine what Johnny?s potential will be when he starts working with top notch trainers and having a promoter that will take him to the next level,? McCammon said. ?This is what is going to be happening when he goes to California.?
Garcia cannot wait to solely focus on his boxing.
?If you want to be the best, you?ve got to train around the best,? Garcia said. ?I think this is what I need. I?m grateful I?ve got somebody who?s willing to send me out there.?
Garcia appreciates all the support he has received from fans in his hometown.
?I know everyone wants to get involved. This is a way to do that,? Garcia said. ?I think it will be a lot of fun.?
