HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? There are few things missing from Muffet McGraw's impressive resume as coach of Notre Dame.

Skylar Diggins and Natalie Novosel filled one of the holes by guiding the third-ranked Fighting Irish to their first outright Big East championship with a 72-59 victory over No. 4 Connecticut on Monday night.

"This team is really special," McGraw said. "They have really high goals and a lot of pride. I'm happy for them and appreciate they are happy for me to win the first one. I love this group."

Novosel scored 21 points and Diggins added 20 for the Irish (28-2, 15-1 Big East), who will try and win their first Big East conference tournament when they begin play on Sunday.

"It's great," said Diggins, who was proudly wearing a Big East championship T-shirt in the postgame news conference. "You know we come out here and play for coach. She deserves it. It's something we wanted to do for her."

The Fighting Irish shared the regular-season championship with UConn in 2001 before going on to win the national title that season. Winning one outright was on their minds from the beginning of the season.

"It's definitely on our list of things we wanted to do," Novosel said. "We wanted to do it for coach since she hadn't gotten one."

Notre Dame had won just one of its previous 14 previous games in Connecticut, including going 0-7 at the XL Center.

Diggins led the way to this victory.

With the game tied at 51, Notre Dame went on an 11-2 run with Diggins scoring the first eight points. She hit two layups on the fast break then connected on a deep 3-pointer. Dolson's layup broke up the junior guard's spurt. A free throw by Diggins and a 3-pointer by Brittany Mallory made it 62-53 with 9:16 left.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who was scoreless in the first half, had five quick points to get UConn within four. That's as close as the Huskies could get. Devereaux Peters followed up a free throw with a block on the other end that led to an easy lay-in by Diggins. Mallory hit another 3-pointer with just under five minutes left that made it 69-59.

A 3-pointer with 3:11 left by Novosel made it a 13-point game and capped the scoring for the night, handing UConn its first double-digit home loss since Dec. 5, 2005, against the Tar Heels.

The defeat left UConn in an unfamiliar position, searching for answers going into the postseason.

"Our team has no fight," coach Geno Auriemma said. "We're the kind of fighters that throw punches and if you keep backing up, we'll keep punching you. But if you punch us back, we're going to run and hide."

The Irish swept the season series from the Huskies and have won three straight overall against UConn, including last season's victory in the national semifinals. North Carolina was the last team to win three in a row from UConn, doing so from 2004-07.

The Huskies showed a bit of grit in the first meeting between the teams this season, an overtime loss in South Bend, Ind., on Jan. 9. The rematch turned out to be a lot less competitive in the end and that concerned the Hall of Fame coach.

"This team has not improved since the last time we played Notre Dame," Auriemma said. "I would have thought we would have made great strides and we have not. It's one of the few years that I can remember that has been the case."

The Huskies fell to third in the conference, losing the tiebreaker to St. John's, which ended UConn's 99-game home winning streak on Feb. 18.

Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points and Stefanie Dolson added 18 for UConn (26-4, 13-3), which has now lost consecutive games at home for the first time in 19 years.

"They put great pressure on us and we backed up and didn't fight back," Dolson said. "We didn't play Connecticut basketball at all. When things weren't going right we took it one-on-one to the basket. It can't be like that. When things like that happen we have to fight back as a team."

This was the first time in six seasons that UConn didn't win or share the Big East regular-season title. The Huskies have won either the Big East regular-season or tournament championship the last 17 years.

Are Rich People Less Moral?

In the book "Freakonomics", about how the statistical tools economists use can bring some light to other areas of social study, the tale is told of a guy who ran a business model of dropping off bagels at office coffee rooms around town, with a voluntary-contribution box, and kept meticulous records for many years of his repayment rate. Turns out the upper floors (as in, upper management) and near corner offices and so on, had the lowest rate.

The authors were careful about drawing conclusions, though they entertained by speculating - was it "have to run to my important meeting, that's more important than digging around for change, my time is worth $900/hour", or was it just a "sense of entitlement"?

This may tip the needle towards "self-entitled bastards", though it remains speculation, of course, not conclusion.

The Prius thing may indicate another reason for being a "self-entitled jerk", of course: environmental smugness. Now I'm just TOTALLY speculating, obviously, but I'd add a data point: my rotten self, and all the rotten cyclists like me. We disobey traffic laws with wild abandon, we're notorious for it. And bikes are vastly more environmental (and, better yet, non-road-space consuming) than Priuses. I am shamelessly anti-authoritarian on a bike the way I am not in a car.

I claim, in my own head (never had to try it on a cop, and don't plan to) that I coast through stop signs and so forth because of the vast importance of Conserving Momentum. And the roadway just "owes" me a little slack because I take up so little of it. And I'm only risking my own damfool neck, I can at most cause others a dent. Or something. If you can get self-entitled by contributing to the common weal that little, imagine how much you get from doing work others value at $900 per hour...

    A Guide to Popular Herbs | myhealthservices.info

Using the right herbs in a dish can make the difference

Most of us eat herbs as part of our daily diets without even realising their inclusion in our foods and drinks. They are mixed in pasta and curry sauces, soups, meat and vegetable flavourings and are an active ingredient in herbal teas.

Using the right herbs in a dish can make the difference between making a dish taste okay versus making it a delight for your taste buds. Herbs have been a major ingredient in cooking around the world and many have originated in middle and eastern cultures.

More and more herbs today are being promoted as vital ingredients in your cooking. So, how do we know which ones to use and which also will be beneficial not just for taste but for our health too? to find out the answers let?s look at some of the popular herbs used in dishes.

BASIL Originally from India, Basil is used commonly in tomato based dishes and is a popular ingredient in Italian, Taiwanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Cambodian cooking. it also works very well with onions, garlic and olives. the leaves of this herb may taste like anise, with a strong, pungent and often sweet smell.

Basil is often used with other herbs like Oregano and Sage in dishes. for the most intense flavor, it should be added at the end of the cooking process. Prolonged heat will cause Basil?s volatile oils to dissipate.

Always try and use fresh basil because you will never get full flavor when using dried basil. So, if using dried, as a guide one tablespoon of fresh chopped basil is equal to one teaspoon dried.

Basil is said to be a tonic and calms the nervous system, it may aid digestion and stomach cramps and basil tea can help relieve nausea.

BAY LEAF An essential ingredient in many South Asian dishes, especially Biryani. it is used frequently in curries, soups, casseroles, stews, braises and p?t?s.

Originating in Asia Minor, it was not introduced to England until the sixteenth century. Today, it is one of the most widely used culinary herbs in Europe and North America.

The herb has a distinctive, sharp and bitter taste and can be used as a whole leaf, dried, crushed or ground for cooking. Bay is one of the herbs that can be put into an Italian sauce or Indian curry in the beginning and left in for the entire simmering process. it is also an ingredient in the South Asian spice Garam Masala.

For European cooking it is part of the herbal seasoning bouquet garni, which is a combination of herbs tied together with string.

The Bay leaf is known to be stimulate and aid digestion.

CORIANDER Coriander, also known as cilantro or dhania is a herb which is popular in South Asian dishes as a garnish at the end of the cooking process. Historically, Coriander seems to have been cultivated in Greece since at least the second millennium BC.

Fresh chopped coriander leaves are used as a garnish immediately before serving South Asian dishes because heat diminishes their flavour. the leaves spoil quickly when removed from the weed, and lose their aroma when dried or frozen.

The fresh leaves are also used an ingredient in Chinese dishes, Mexican cooking, particularly in salsa and guacamole and as a garnish, and in salads in Russia.

Both the seeds and leaves of Coriander are used for aiding the urinary tract and treating infections of this area.

DILL Dill is commonly used in fish dishes, pickles and soups. it originated within an area around the Mediterranean and the South of Russia. In India, dill is known as ?Savaa? in Hindi or ?Soa? not related to Soy, in Punjabi.

The flavor of Dill weed diminishes greatly the longer it is cooked. Add it at the last minute for full flavor and aroma. Conversely, heating brings out the aroma of Dill seed, so toasting in a hot frypan before using helps bring out the best in flavour.

It is prepared in the manner of yellow Moong daal as a main-course Indian dish. In Middle Eastern dishes the herb is used in cold dishes, pickles and with fish.

NFL concussion fallout raises red flags in NASCAR

FILE - In this Feb. 19, 2012, file photo, Michael Waltrip climbs out of his car after his qualifying attempt for the NASCAR Daytona 500 auto race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. If Waltrip really wanted to sit down and count up all the concussions he has sustained over a NASCAR career that stretches back nearly 30 years, he'd certainly hit 10 _ and probably keep counting. Safety improvements since Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001 have gone a long way toward preventing head injuries today, and NASCAR officials have taken steps to improve the way they identify and treat concussions. But Waltrip knows that won't undo all the hits he took in the 1980s and '90s. (AP Photo/Terry Renna, File)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? If Michael Waltrip were to count up all the concussions he has sustained over a NASCAR career that stretches back nearly 30 years, he'd certainly hit 10 ? and probably keep going.

Safety measures since Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001 have gone a long way toward preventing head injuries, and NASCAR officials have taken steps to improve the way they identify and treat concussions. But Waltrip knows that won't undo all those hits he took in the 1980s and '90s.

"I whacked my head ? a lot," Waltrip said. "If you think about this, I showed up in '85, when it was relatively 'safe.' We thought we had it figured out. I raced all the way through 2001 when people were getting killed. And all through that time, I was hitting my head and knocking myself out and getting concussions and going to the hospital. And I don't know what that means to me in 10 years. But I know it's a concern."

The 48-year-old Waltrip gets uneasy when he hears stories about NFL players and other athletes who are having serious neurological problems after they retire, issues that a growing amount of research indicates may have been caused by repetitive brain injuries they sustained during their playing days.

Could that happen to him, too?

"I would be the perfect case study to see what's going to happen," Waltrip said. "Because I can go back and look at the races and count up times I was knocked unconscious that I can't count on both hands."

Five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson says he has had two concussions racing stock cars, and probably many more racing dirt bikes when he was younger.

"We're not immune to concussions," Johnson said. "And certainly after severe concussions or being concussed several times, the numbers change. We know that. The dynamic is there. I think we've reduced the opportunity for it to happen, but ultimately, it can happen. I just think the odds are a lot better today than they've ever been."

Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500 ? which came after drivers Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty and Tony Roper all were killed from similar head injuries ? forced NASCAR to get serious about safety.

Today, drivers must wear a head and neck restraint, while impact-absorbing SAFER barriers have been installed on racetrack walls and NASCAR completely redesigned race cars to reduce the risk of injury. Racing seats used to look a lot like passenger car seats; now they look more like something out of a spaceship, with foam-padded supports on each side of the helmet that barely allows a driver's head to move during a crash.

It's working. Going into Sunday's Daytona 500, there hasn't been a death in NASCAR's top three national series since Earnhardt's.

"If I'm Kasey Kahne or Kyle Busch, I don't have those concerns any more," Waltrip said. "We've got the cars and the tracks, we've got it all fixed. You can still get hurt. You're running 200 miles an hour. But the chances of getting hurt are slimmer. The chances of hitting your head and hurting it are really slim."

NASCAR officials say they've identified 29 concussions in their top three series since 2004 ? and only 11 of those happened in the past five seasons.

"Not huge numbers, when you see it," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president of racing operations. "But with each of those, each one's different, we've had to assess each one differently. Knock on wood, we haven't had as many to have to deal with."

And while there have been some drivers who experienced long-term effects from traumatic head injuries over the years ? including Bobby Allison, Ernie Irvan, Jerry Nadeau and Steve Park ? O'Donnell says NASCAR doesn't see any evidence of widespread health issues related to multiple head injuries, as the NFL and other sports are.

"There's always concerns for any driver that's been in the sport," O'Donnell said. "But in terms of drivers formally approaching us and saying, 'Hey, I want to talk about this or look at it,' we haven't seen that occur, in terms of what you're seeing in other sports right now. We'd certainly be open to working with anyone, if we see that, in helping to stop any trend that we saw."

In response to reports of football players, hockey players and other athletes having serious neurological issues in retirement, researchers at the Boston-based Sports Legacy Institute have studied brain tissue of deceased former athletes. They've found evidence of a degenerative brain disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy that has been linked to repetitive brain injuries.

O'Donnell said NASCAR officials have noticed.

"Absolutely," O'Donnell said. "It's something we pay attention to on any aspect of other sports, what they're doing. Can we learn from it? Can we implement some of these things? We're open to working with any other sport as well."

For now, veteran driver Jeff Burton is trying to gather as much information as he can about the long-term effects of concussions. Burton's father-in-law is a physician and has attended sports medicine conferences on his behalf.

"I think anybody that has any sense at all has to understand that it doesn't matter if you're playing football or hockey or racing a car, head injuries can have bad ramifications later in life," Burton said. "It appears to be the case. I think we are exposed to less of it. But at the same time, when we do have them, they can be big hits."

The 44-year-old Burton started racing in NASCAR's top division in 1993, well before the post-Earnhardt safety advances.

"I can tell you that in retrospect, there's been many times that I've had concussions," Burton said. "And the definition of concussion is a very widely used term, and how you actually define a concussion has changed over the years. But there's no question that with hitting concrete, not having (today's safety equipment), there's no question people had concussions. No question."

Waltrip said he blacked out after an accident in practice at Las Vegas in 1998, but kept it to himself.

"Hit the wall, got in the backup car, made a couple laps, went to the hotel, woke up the next morning, didn't even know how I got there," Waltrip said. "You could just fake people out back then. 'Yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine.' They didn't care. 'OK, you're fine.'"

Today, any driver involved in a significant accident must visit the infield medical center, where checking for signs of a concussion is standard procedure. If there's reason to suspect a concussion, the driver will be sent to a local hospital. From there, the driver will need to be cleared by a neurosurgeon with at least five years' experience in sports-related head injuries before he or she can race again.

"They always ask you," Burton said. "The key to that, though, is honesty. Unless it's obvious. Sometimes you can tell. But a lot of times, in football and in every sport, people say, 'I'm fine.' It's hard if you don't tell them the truth to help you."

Burton acknowledged that drivers, along with athletes in other sports, have an incentive to hide symptoms.

"There's fear in not being able to do what you want to do," Burton said. "NASCAR's always been really good saying, 'Look, we don't want to keep you from racing unless it's in your best interests.' They've been pretty good about that. People are always nervous, I think, in any sport to stand up and say I'm having these issues, because they want to race or they want to play. But if NASCAR doesn't want you to race, then you probably shouldn't be racing."

Mortgage Refinance Guide To Financial Peace | Rai Chertkoff Real ...

    Mortgage Refinance

Are you looking for favorable rates and terms on your loan as your monthly payment is on the higher side?? Or are you looking to consolidate two loans into one so that you can pay off faster? You will be able to achieve all this and more by refinancing your mortgage. Mortgage refinance basically means to replace your current mortgage with a new loan with a more favorable interest rate and terms that you can afford to manage. This new loan is secured on the same property as your current loan. The new loan funds are used to pay down the current mortgage while any remaining money can be used to your best advantage.? Read on to find out the benefits of mortgage refinance and how to get payment assistance.
Is the question when and why to refinance my home on your mind? These few reasons will help you to measure the advantages it has to offer. Like; by refinancing you can save more, as lower rates usually mean lower payments by extending the term. However, with an extended term, you will be paying more in interest during the life of the loan.? Again if currently you have an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) you may choose to refinance to get another ARM with better terms and the loan may start out at a lower interest rate. Again you would like to convert an ARM to fixed-rate mortgage (FRM). Another good reason to consider refinance, is that you would like to get cash out from the equity built up in your home so that when you refinance for an amount greater than what you owe on your home, you can receive the difference in a cash payment.
As we have considered the advantages of refinance, discussing when not to consider it, will help you to decide better.? Refinancing is not a good idea when you have had your mortgage for a long time as the proportion of your payment that is credited to the principal of your loan increases each year, while the proportion credited to the interest decreases each year. In the later years of your mortgage, more of your payment applies to principal and helps build equity. By refinancing late in your mortgage, you will restart the amortization process, and most of your monthly payment will be credited to paying interest again and not to building equity. Again, see if your current mortgage has a prepayment penalty, a penalty which a lender charges if you pay off your mortgage loan early and paying a prepayment penalty will increase the time it will take to break-even when you calculate the costs of the refinance and the monthly savings you expect to gain.
It is very common to pay 3 percent to 6 percent of your outstanding principal in the form of refinance fees. This cost is in addition to any prepayment penalties or other costs of paying off any mortgages you might have. Now refinance fees vary from state to state and lender to lender.
Persevere and also be on the lookout for potential lenders in the real world and online? until you discover the lender that?s right for you and ready to offer the best mortgage refinance deals, your one stop resource for saving money.

Nokia Siemens HSPA+ Multiflow lets one device connect to two cell sites simultaneously

If you've ever used a cell phone while moving, then you've probably experienced the depressed network connectivity that becomes more of an issue as you move further away from any given tower. Some of us are even unfortunate enough to reside or work right at the edge of a cell, forced to live with poor connectivity for much of every day. A new feature called HSPA+ Multiflow may offer some relief, "delivering double the data speed and up to 50 percent faster response compared to existing HSPA+ networks," according to Nokia Siemens, which will be demonstrating the technology at Mobile World Congress later this month. Essentially, Multiflow allows compatible devices on the edge of a cell to connect to two sites simultaneously, letting your device send and receive data between two base stations at once. Multiflow will be available as a software update for Single RAN systems, so it could make its way to a cell site near you just after Nokia Siemens flips the switch during the second half of 2013. Full PR is just past the break.

Eating Disorders, Fertility Problems And Unplanned Pregnancies

Eating disorders such asanorexia and bulimia are associated with fertility problems and negative attitudes to pregnancy, according to a UK study. The research also revealed high rates of unplanned pregnancies in women with a history of anorexia, suggesting they may be underestimating their chances of conceiving. The study is to be published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.?
Eating disorders are known to cause disruption to a woman's menstrual cycle, with substantial weight loss leading to hormonal changes that might prevent ovulation, but so far little research has been carried out into how eating disorders might affect fertility.?

A team at King's College London and UCL investigated a group of 11,088 pregnant women from the Avon area of the UK, with women asked to complete questionnaires at 12 and 18 weeks gestation.

Women with lifetime anorexia and bulimia were compared to the group as a whole to assess the impact of their eating disorder on attitudes to fertility and pregnancy.?

Of the total number of women, 171 (1.5%) had anorexia at some point in their life, 199 (1.8%) had bulimia and an additional 82 (0.7%) had suffered from both conditions. The remaining 10,636 (96%) formed the general population comparison group.?

The survey revealed that a higher proportion of women (39.5%) with a history of anorexia and bulimia took longer than six months to conceive compared to the general population (25%). However, they were no more likely to take longer than 12 months to conceive than the general population. The study found that women with anorexia and bulimia were more than twice as likely (6.2%) than the general population (2.7%) to have received treatment or help to conceive their current pregnancy.?

However, when asked at 18 weeks gestation, women with anorexia were more likely to report that their current pregnancy was unintentional.

In this group of women 41.5% said their pregnancy was unplanned compared to 28.6% of women in the general population.?

The majority of women reported feeling overjoyed or pleased when they discovered that they were pregnant (71%). However, eating disorders were linked to negative feelings about pregnancy. Further analysis has shown that women with anorexia and bulimia were more than twice as likely (9.8%) than the general population (3.8%) to report feeling unhappy when they found out they were pregnant.?

Lead author, Abigail Easter, from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, said:?

"This research highlights that there are risks to fertility associated with eating disorders. However, the high rates of unplanned pregnancies in women with a history of anorexia suggest that women may be underestimating their chances of conceiving.?

"Pregnancy can be a difficult time for women with eating disorders and this is the first time feelings about pregnancy have been looked at amongst this group of women.?

"Women planning a pregnancy should ideally seek treatment for their eating disorder symptoms prior to conception and health professionals should be aware of eating disorders when assessing fertility and providing treatment for this."?

Dr Nadia Micali, Institute of Child Health, UCL and lead investigator added:?

"Health professionals are often unaware of the effects of eating disorders on pregnancy and fertility. Women with a history of anorexia for example are more likely to have unplanned pregnancies. This has now been replicated in three large studies and has important repercussions on the level of antenatal and postnatal care they will need."?

Professor Philip Steer, BJOG editor-in-chief said:?

"Eating disorders have important clinical consequences, especially in women. This research shows that more women with eating disorders are unprepared for pregnancy and will therefore require more support during the antenatal and postnatal period."

Before doing away with the lower cabinets, you will additionally need to remove the countertops utilizing a saw to cut them into small pieces. Removing the floor coverings will be easy upon having removed the lower cabinet. At this time, everything really should be out of the kitchen, in order to inspect the walls, and if need be, replace the sheet rock. It?s possible that all you will need to do is patch up all of the holes, and only re-texture the walls and ceiling. Next you can repaint the ceiling and walls, and upgrade the electrical plugs and switches. Doing this all by yourself, you will probably need drywall supplies, painting supplies, such as paint brushes, and electrical tools. You may have these tools already if you have taken care of things around the house.

After you have completed painting, you can lay down new underlayment by nailing it down employing a hammer or nail gun or screwing down with a power screw driver. You can also make use of the power screw driver to mount the upper cabinets and lower cabinets. Some people prefer installing the flooring, generally when linoleum is used, and then putting the cabinet on top of the flooring, but most people install the cabinets first. The next thing to undertake is to finish it off by installing the new counter tops, dropping in the new sink, hooking up the plumbing, finishing the base and adding new appliances then you are done.

There are many people who have the tools and experience needed to redo the kitchen. For the rest of you, there will be a lot of learning to do and a lot of tools to buy.

AMES, Iowa The instant communications technology that nurtured grassroots revolutions in the Arab world could also help farmers cope with climate change, according to Iowa State University researchers.

And so the researchers Steven Fales, a professor of agronomy; and Gene Takle, director of Iowa State's Climate Science Program, a professor of agronomy and of geological and atmospheric sciences are organizing a symposium to explore that idea during the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Feb. 16-20 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The theme of this year's meeting is "Flattening the World: Building a Global Knowledge Society."

The Iowa State researchers are working on the symposium with Mannava Sivakumar, director of climate prediction and adaptation for the World Meteorological Organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.

They're calling their session "Enhancing Information Flow for Global Food Security in the Face of Climate Change." The symposium will be 1:30-4:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in Room 214 of the Vancouver Convention Centre's West Building.

"This whole climate change debate has gotten to be monotonous," Fales said. "Many of us are saying it's time to forget about the naysayers and go into action, which will require adaptation and resilience."

The symposium will consider an action plan that calls for developing global systems that distribute information about crops and climate change through local networks and cell phones. Fales figures such a system would move information far more quickly than the current system of studying, discovering, publishing and then communicating to farmers via extension systems.

"In these unstable climate conditions, the situation can change rapidly from season to season," Fales said.

And when the latest climate model indicates a change in growing conditions, Fales said there should be a way to quickly notify a region's farmers that wheat, for example, may be the best crop for the year.

The researchers also see information flowing back from the farmers: "The farmers' observations could be transferred back to a database so we could see trends emerging," Fales said. "And that could actually happen in the upper Midwest of the U.S. or in Uganda."

Takle, who studies climate change on a regional scale, said the symposium will consider strategies and technologies that would work around the globe. Speakers will also consider how research can be organized to encourage the timely flow of data to and from farms.

The ultimate goal, he said, is "getting knowledge to the people who need it."

Speaking during the symposium will be Augustine Langyintuo, officer in charge of policy and partnerships for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya; L.S. Rathore, the head of Agro-Meteorological Advisory Service of the India Meteorological Department based in New Delhi; Bruce Campbell, program director of the Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research and the University of Copenhagen; and William Easterling, dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State University.

Fales said he and other symposium organizers are serious about moving beyond ideas and talk.

"We're focusing on action," he said. "We hope to come out of the symposium with a set of specific recommendations for the policy and scientific communities."
