All the trimmings... London fashion graduates prove they have a bright future

Sebastiaan Pieter Groenen from the Netherlands was the toast of the British fashion industry at last night's catwalk show, after competing with 36 other designers to walk away with the prestigious award.

Groenen, whose first collection was watched by the likes of accessories designer Lulu Guinness and songstress VV Brown, offered a relaxed take on modern tailoring infused with sporty details. Inspired by street fashion and youth culture, the collection featured razor back cut suits with raw edges and long sheer overlay vests in dove grey and soft pink.

The 24-year-old, who now lives in Bethnal Green, was delighted with the achievement."It feels absolutely amazing to win", says Groenen, "but completely unexpected. I was just pulled on stage, I didn't even know what I was going out for. I had to check afterwards what I'd even won."

After completing internships with Raf Simons at Jil Sander and with publications including Fantastic Man and Monocle, the young designer hopes one day to launch his own eponymous label. "I think there's definitely a calling for interesting menswear in the industry", he said. "Womenswear gets a lot of the attention, but men can push boundaries too."

The show was a night of firsts for the college in more than one respect. Hosted at Hackney House - a key media showspace built for the Olympic period - graduates from other pathways including Contour and Jewellery design were also given the opportunity to appear on the catwalk.

A collaborative effort from three students - Rose Irwin, Diana Auria Harris and Lili Colley - won the award for Fashion Innovation. Womenswear designer Irwin produced a bold array of patterned bomber jackets and cropped trousers, while contour specialist Harris provided printed swimwear in fluoro shades and jeweller Colley added Perspex accessories such as visors and chunky necklaces for the combined collection.

Buckinghamshire-born Ashleigh Downer also?took home the Barnet Lawson award for best use of trimmings. Showing a commitment to sustainable fashion, the 22-year-old design technology student used crystals grown in jam jars from her kitchen on her garments, as well as test tubes filled with coloured pigment and enamel.

Other notable highlights included designs from Lucy Adjoa Armah, who sent out an all-denim collection which incorporated perforated and distressed textures, and Muswell Hill-based Mary Binding for her high-shine moulded leather outerwear.

While Central Saint Martins is often considered the most innovative and avant garde university in London, the London College of Fashion has long been revered for its ability to produce commercially aware designers who produce collections that are both interesting and hugely sellable. This show served as a fitting example.

Talent agencies bet on digital as film and TV falter

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - As film slates shrink and DVD sales decline, Hollywood talent agencies have increased their investment in digital and social ventures to make up for falling profits from shrinking star salaries.

In the last two months alone, three major developments have accelerated the pace. To begin, the CAA-backed mobile gaming company, Moonshark, launched its first game. Second, WME made a seven-figure investment in the social video company, Chill. Also, UTA added social media superstar FourSquare to its client roster.

Meanwhile, ICM Partners rebranded its digital division in May under the leadership of former Warner Bros. executive Keyvan Pemani.

"Everybody in town is trying to figure out how to diversify and figure out different models and ways of making up for lost income that used to exist purely in the film and TV market," Peter Principato, a partner at Principato-Young Entertainment, told TheWrap.

"The evolution of Yahoo, AOL, Amazon and Netflix and the changing digital model, where they are all becoming cable channels, has people paying much more attention."

As the $20 million star salaries of the '80s and '90s have become a fading memory, talent agencies have looked to diversify by turning to areas such as sports and fashion. But there is little doubt that digital is the next frontier as online businesses figure out how to make money.

Rick Nicita, a former partner at CAA, said agencies have to diversify to give themselves a financial cushion in these "very volatile days."

The agency has already dipped its toe into this area, dating to the dotcom boom and pioneering days of online video a decade ago. Subsequent initiatives include CAA's incubation of Funny or Die with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and UTA becoming the first agency with a digital-only division in 2006.

But now the agencies are diving in full force, in some cases using in-house investment banks or newfound capital.

ICM Partners hired Pemani because of his Silicon Valley connections and entrepreneurial instincts. It hopes he can better extend its existing talent and brands into web series and social-media sponsorships deals, as well as find new talent to sign and companies to invest in or incubate.

CAA and WME recently sold chunks of their agencies to outside investors, a move borne out of a desire for a cash influx - or to cash out. WME recently sold a non-controlling 31 percent stake to Silver Lake Partners, the Silicon Valley private equity firm, while in 2010 CAA sold a 35% share of the company to TPG Partners.

Officials at the two agencies would not speak on the record, but Brian Norgard, co-founder of Chill, told TheWrap, "It seems as if they are paying attention very closely to this new convergence of entertainment and technology."

And, he said, agencies "that align around digital become more valuable. You can find lots of different ways to make money and can do it without so many hands in the pot."

WME, along with venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, announced this week their investment in Chill, a social video company that has built a platform for users to view, share and comment on assorted online videos.

The talent agency also has invested in companies like Grab Games, a social gaming company, and Red Interactive, a web-focused marketing agency, among others.

Like WME, CAA has focused on investment and incubation with such projects as Funny or Die, Moonshark and WhoSay, a social network for high-profile individuals like celebrities and athletes. Moonshark operates out of CAA's headquarters in Los Angeles, though that will change as its staff expands.

One senior agent from a competing agency who declined to be identified described the incubation and investment model as "more of a bulk and volume approach" but also acknowledged it made business sense.

"When people see an Instagram sell for $1 billion to Facebook, that's what drives these agencies to look at that business," Max Benator, executive producer of "Sonia's Travels," a web series and a former agent at UTA and The Collective, told TheWrap.

"I don't think the agency is saying we want to operationally run a business, but they can package a technology or tech company the same way they do an entertainment property."

Moreover, experimenting first, whether with Red Interactive or Moonshark, permits the agencies to build networks of related businesses that can work with one another.

While UTA has invested in about a dozen companies, it breaks its digital department into four areas: online entertainment, video games, consulting and social media. In fact, it is the lone agency with a social media agent, Eric Kuhn, whose combines consulting clients like the NBA and FourSquare with managing social media for Rashida Jones and teaming Bow Wow with web video service Tout.

In addition, it continues to sign high-profile YouTube talent like Lucas Cruikshank, better known as Fred, whose success has spawned popular Nickelodeon films, as well as video game creators, like Electronic Arts.

CAA, WME and UTA have been the most aggressive in their digital efforts, but all agencies are recognizing the need to embrace this new marketplace.

Whether the agency is large or small, the challenge is creating a profitable business. That means capitalizing on their core asset - the talent - and pairing them with emerging social and digital businesses.

"Agencies own a vital piece of the value chain," Norgard told TheWrap. "The clients they represent have a massive footprint and someone will learn how to extract more value from those footprints.

Matt Kozlov, the CEO of Moonshark, said his company came about because major celebrities noticed the growth of the mobile app space and wanted to get involved.

Jennifer Lopez, for example, is the celebrity force behind the company's first game, "DancePad," a finger break dancing app for mobile phones.

Because businesses are so far only marginally profitable if at all, they must look for auxiliary ways to generating income.

Gersh, for example, represents a variety of digital talents, such as Epic MealTime, a group of Canadians, led by Harley Morenstein, that cook and eat heart attack-inducing food while drawing millions of people to their videos. Epic MealTime only makes six figures a year from advertising on its YouTube channel, but it brings in another seven figures by selling merchandise like T-shirts.

Cruikshank (Fred) has spawned a mini empire of his own thanks to the Nickelodeon movies. Funny or Die is not just a hugely popular website, it has birthed television shows like HBO's "Funny or Die Presents" and a national comedy tour.

Consulting fees and equity in social and digital companies led one senior agent to describe digital as generating a "meaningful amount of revenue" and a "very good business for the agency."

"It's not a loss leader; it's not looked at as something that everyone is in so we must be as well," the agent said. "We're doing it in a way that's profitable."

Marketing Is NOT About Relationships ? B2B Digital Marketing

A Couple Walking Across the LawnDevelop a relationship. Don?t propose on the first date. Relationships take time.

You talk about relationships as a marketer. You use the same words and clich?s. However, you don?t really mean a relationship.

You won?t take a walk in the park with me because we enjoy spending time together and share what we did today just because we want each other to know.

What do businesses really mean when they talk about relationships and what is marketing?s place in those relationships with clients, prospects and the marketplace at large?

Business Relationships that Matter

In the vast majority of enterprise B2B companies, relationships that matter are between people. This is why sales people with existing relationships are recruited and account managers work to develop personal relationships with clients.

Marketing Isn?t About Relationships

Marketing is tasked with reaching the masses, even when the masses are just your 500 customers in the niche market you serve.

Here are three reasons marketing cannot be focused on developing relationships with these people:

  1. Marketing will need to transfer the relationship to sales or account teams. Rather than create opportunities, this creates disruption.
  2. There are far too many people for marketing to develop meaningful relationships.
  3. Marketing is predominantly one-way communication. Outside of social networks, the only dialogue back is a click. That click may be important, but calling it a conversation is an insult to the person with their hand on the mouse.

Marketing?s Real Role In Business Relationships

Marketing doesn?t create relationships, but marketing does have an important role. Focusing on how marketing contributes will position your company to have more meaningful and productive relationships with customers.

Capture Attention
Without someone?s attention, your business cannot develop a relationship. Marketing?s first stepping stone is getting attention, using advertising, content marketing or any other tools at their disposal.

Identify Potential Prospects
Sales is the first stop for relationship building in many organizations, but who should sales focus on? Marketing needs to identify potential prospects that are likely receptive to speaking with sales and beginning to develop a relationship.

Activities ranging from inbound marketing to lead scoring and distribution are critical for marketers to master here.

Support Relationship Building
Marketing can provide the materials (often in various forms of content) that supports sales conversations and the ongoing communications streams that keep your sales and account teams in front of people.

When someone picks up the phone to actually have a conversation in response to any of the material marketing has provided, the conversation is not with marketing and the relationships that develop are not with marketing.

In Summary

The business relationships you need to develop are not relationships with marketing. Marketing must play a supporting, not a leading, role in the development of successful business relationships.

Your Turn

What is your view, has relationship become a thin buzzword in marketing, or do you believe marketing should be the primary point in a company?s relationship with customers and prospects?

Share your perspective in the comments below or with me on Twitter (@wittlake).

Orange Cinnamon Pork Chops - slow cooker recipe

I love classifieds on Facebook and always look there for cheap cook books, anyways recently I have purchased for $5 cookbook - Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade slow cooker recipes. I was not aware before who Sandra Lee is and never saw any of her shows ( the book is from food network series). I asked my hubby to pick some meals from it and promised that I will try making them. So here it is one of them ( I will not post the failures : > well not right now ). It serves 4 people but hubby liked it so much that he ate actually 2 pork chops !

The recipe is very easy ! Here is what you will need :

  • 4 center-cut pork chops, cut 1 inch thick
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen chopped onion
  • 1 jar (16-oz) orange marmalade
  • 1/4 cup Chardonnay or other white wine ( you can drink the rest if you like! )
  • 4 sticks (2 inches each) cinnamon
  • Orange slices, halved, optional?

Now the preparation :

First sprinkle chops with salt and pepper: set them aside. Then place onion in a 4-qt slow cooker. Place your chops on top of it. Spoon marmalade over chops. Pour wine over all, and add cinnamon sticks. Then cover and cook on LOW heat setting for 4 1/2-6 hours. You can discard cinnamon sticks, and then serve it with orange slices and rice. Now that was easy right? Yummy! Will be making it again just wondering what I could replace white wine with? Hope you will like it :)

Brother of lesbian teen shot in head: She's 'fighting'

Courtesy of Hilario Chapa

Siblings Patricia Martinez, left, Hilario Chapa, and Mary Kristene Chapa on April 28, 2012. Kristene Chapa was found shot in the head, along with her girlfriend, in a South Texas park on Saturday. She is recovering in the intensive care unit of a hospital.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

When Hilario Chapa went to a hospital to identify his sister, who was found shot in the head along with her girlfriend in a South Texas park, her face was unrecognizable. He and another sibling had to check her hands and feet and the rest of her body instead, in order to determine this was Mary Kristene Chapa, their sister.

But days after the brutal attack that left Kristene?s girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, dead, the 18-year-old has opened her eyes and is making inquiries about her recovery, though she has to write on a clipboard and use sign language to communicate, and she has little sensation on the left side of her body, her brother said.

?I do believe she knows what?s happened, but she hasn?t chosen to talk (about) it on her own,? he said. ?I?m under the impression that she doesn?t know? who did it.

?I think she?s pissed about what happened to her and I think she?s ready to get up and take off walking if she could,? he added.

The swelling from the gunshot has gone down, but it's unclear when she'll be able to leave the intensive care unit, said Chapa, 32, who also spoke to NBC Latino.

?All that we?ve gotten from the doctors is that she is making very ? impressive progress,? he told msnbc.com, saying it had been "rough." "I can?t even imagine how the other family feels about this situation. ... It?s very tragic.?

Olgin, 19, and Chapa were found in a grassy area of the park by a couple Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head in Portland, Texas, Police Chief Randy Wright said. Olgin, a first-year university student living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was alive and rushed to an area hospital.

Police have recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found, but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it at the time, he said.

In the community of Portland, the crime rate is low, with the last homicide occurring in 2010, Wright said. The police haven?t established a motive for the attack on the girls, who were planning to spend some time in the park that fateful Friday night before seeing a movie, Olgin?s father, Mario, told local television station kiiitv.com.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," the police chief said.

Wright told msnbc.com on Monday that: ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack, but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Father of slain lesbian teen: 'Justice will be served'

The thought of an attack on his sister because she is gay is incomprehensible to Chapa. She is an ?all-American kid,? who excels at her studies as well as at softball (she is a pitcher), and is well liked, he said.

?A lot of people want to speculate it was a hate crime. I just can?t comprehend why somebody would shoot two ? 18 or 19 year old girl(s) over a hate crime,? he said. ?The brutality of it, you know, it?s just unimaginable.?

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

?I know that Texas has a lot of stereotypes ? but South Texas really is a good place,? he added. ?You don?t see a lot of hate crimes going on down here. You don?t hear about gay bashing or anything like that.?

Chapa didn?t know his sister was gay before the shootings, though he had thought she might be. He said his mother and other sister already knew. Friends say the pair had been going out since mid-February.

?Our family is very supportive,? he said. ?We will take Kristina ? for who she is and what she wanted to be, and we will support her in that.?

Chapa said his sister has maintained a stoic face: "You just see her fighting," he said, noting she was eagerly asking questions about her condition.

?She?s moving her right side very strongly,? he said. ?But her left side, they haven?t used that word (paralysis), it?s too early to tell. ... She just hasn?t moved it.

"No one is saying she?s paralyzed," he added, noting that he believed his parents had said she experienced some feeling on her left side.

Kristene has written Mollie?s name down a few times, but Chapa said he worried about telling her she was killed, fearing it could cause a medical setback.

?I'm kind of afraid," he said. "She is in such a fragile state right now.?

?The shooting has taken its toll on the family. The parents are maintaining a 24-hour vigil at the hospital and Chapa said he was initially a wreck.

Doctors have told them almost no one survives this kind of shooting, especially given the long period of time between being shot and found. It was an "amazing thing,? he said.

The shooting has also hit the family hard financially. Chapa?s father had just started a new job in West Texas and had not yet enrolled for health insurance, so Kristene is without coverage. They are seeking donations to help them pay for the medical care, which doesn?t yet have an end in sight. (Donations can be made here)

The family has yet to meet with Olgin?s family, though they hope to soon and to provide them support as well, said Chapa, who had never met Mollie.

Chapa has taken time off work from his job as an equipment cleaner at the Corpus Christi Army Depot to focus on his sister?s recovery. During these tough days, he said it is Kristene who gives him encouragement.

"I can honestly say that just watching my sister progress, watching her come back to us, and ? seeing her strength, it gives me strength,? he said. ?There?s nothing that anybody can tell you ? all you can really do is just hang onto hope and just watching her gives me hope.?

The Bachelorette Recap: Making Her List, Czech-ing It Twice

Six roses. Four dudes. Things are getting serious on The Bachelorette.

After the past two weeks saw villains Ryan Bowers and Kalon McMahon dispatched by Emily Maynard, were there any more fireworks in store this evening?

Who succeeded in wooing our beloved single mom from North Carolina, and who failed to make the final cut before next week's coveted hometown dates?

Follow this link for a rundown of The Bachelorette spoilers we know thus far, including the (alleged) final three. Then read on for THG's official +/- recap!

Emily and John

First, Prague is on my bucket list now. Beautiful city. Plus 4.

Our Southern Belle Emily Maynard walks the streets of Prague, sans daughter Ricki, musing about the hometown dates. Hostman Chris Harrison tells the guys this week is important because next week are hometown dates. Jef with one F tells us he's really hoping he gets a hometown date next week. We get it. Hometown dates are important. Minus 3.

Of the six guys, three of them will get a one-on-one date with Emily this week. The first date goes to Arie Luyendyk Jr., probably because Emily wants to kiss him (loudly) a few more times. His jacket has elbow patches. Minus 3.

Emily thinks it's shady that Arie hasn't told her about his relationship with Cassie the producer. His failure to disclose his past relationship with someone in Emily's inner circle is disloyal somehow to her.

Chris decides to set the record straight about the rumors regarding Arie and Cassie and introduces a segment of Cassie interviewing Emily about Arie. Cassie says it's no big deal, it was a long time ago, blah blah blah. Emily says the fact that they dated is no big deal. It's the fact that nobody told her that they knew each other that's the problem.

Emily probes Arie to see if he'll spill the beans about his relationship to Cassie. The deep dark secret he's hiding? He had a tattoo of an ex-girlfriend's name (a different Cassie) on his arm but he's had it covered up now. Minus 12.

Emily, Arie, and Cassie all sat down, off camera, to discuss this relationship. Arie said he didn't think his relationship with Cassie Lambert mattered, which is why he didn't tell her. Emily realizes that her feelings for Arie haven't been affected by this revelation. They kiss some more at dinner. A lot more. Plus 10.

Emily and Arie KissBack at the house, the other guys all wonder what Arie and Emily are doing. Doug says they're probably just having dinner somewhere cool. Sure, Doug, that's all.

John gets the next one-on-one date. Chris says it's killing him inside that he's not getting dates. Minus 4 for melodrama.

Arie tells Emily that when they were in Croatia, he realized something. He loves her. Plus 20.

And then they kiss some more. And then there are actual fireworks.

John and Emily go on a date and paint on the Lennon wall. Emily says she likes him as a person, but she doesn't know how she feels about him romantically. So they put their initials on a padlock that signifies eternal love and try to fasten it on a wall in Prague. But the lock won't stay fastened. Symbolic lock, yes? John's not the one. Minus 3.

Chris is "driving himself crazy" sitting at the house. So crazy he has to drink. He's on edge. DUDE, you're in PRAGUE. Stop whining and go see something cool! Minus 12.

Emily's still confused about John, so she takes him to dinner in a dungeon. Didn't she take him to dinner in a cave already this season? John's ex-girlfriend cheated on him, so now he's not a starter. He's a closer.Emily and John on The Bachelorette

Chris is still whining about how he didn't get another one-on-one date. Still. He's not getting the third one-on-one either. Because it's a group date with Sean and Doug as his wingmen.

Sean just has to see kiss Emily, so he goes running around the city of Prague looking for her. Plus 3.

Conveniently, there's a table for two at a quaint little cafe. Conveniently. Minus 2.

Sean, Doug, Chris, and Emily explore dungeons and towers and Doug makes a toast to her gracious nature. She's concerned about their chemistry. I'm concerned about their chemistry.

Doug's grazes Emily's leg with his hand and loses his train of thought completely. He says he's a slow mover and he really wants to kiss her. So then he does. And it's the most awkward kiss in the history of the show. Minus 10.

Doug's going home now.

There's a little more room on the group date without Doug there. Emily gives Sean and Chris each a key. Sean's key opens the door. Chris is going to go whine some more, I'm sure.

Jef with one F gets the final date in Prague.

Chris finally gets some alone time with Emily and the first thing he wants to know is why he hasn't had a one-on-one date with her. She says something about giving him back his confidence and then gives Sean the rose. Plus 4.

Chris is pissed off over not getting the rose. Temper, temper, Chris. Minus 7.

Emily thinks Jef would make a great dad since he's a big kid himself. Emily, honey, the last thing you want is a grown kid to take care of. Minus 3.

They go to a marionette shop and after buying two marionettes, Jef leaves Emily standing in the street. He has to go back and buy a marionette for Ricki. Plus 15.

Emily and Jef go to a library to play with their puppets. And Jef uses his puppet to tell Emily's puppet that the puppet is beautiful and that his puppet is "100...1 million percent in love" with it. I...plus? minus? I can't decide.

They sit on a blanket in the middle of a library and talk about the hometown date. One thing Jef's got going for him? He's from a big family and Emily's ovaries are on overdrive. Plus 5.

Jef broke up with his last girlfriend because his parents didn't like her. No pressure, Emily.

Again, they're in the middle of a library. Making out and talking about marriage. In a library. Does Emily read?

Emily Maynard's Hair

It's time for another cocktail party and Chris is near tears. The person he was yesterday isn't the person he is and he believes in them. And man tears. All he wants is a few minutes to talk to Emily. Minus 18.

She's decided to skip the cocktail party and go straight to the Rose Ceremony. Chris looks like he's about to puke. Or punch something.

Sean's headed to a hometown date next week thanks to the rose that Chris didn't get. Jef gets the first rose of the ceremony. Arie gets the second.

Chris pipes up and says he just has to talk to her, so they take a walk into the next room where he man blubbers while she looks on in doe-eyed wonder. Minus 2.

His man tears worked. Chris got the final rose.

Going home:

  • Doug (cut loose on the group date)
  • John "Wolf" (no rose)

Sean, Arie, Jef, and Chris are taking Emily home to meet their families on next week's hometown dates.

Pujols hits 12th HR in Angels' win

By DAVID GINSBURG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:43 p.m. ET June 26, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - Add Camden Yards to the expansive list of stadiums that can't contain the masterful bat of Albert Pujols.

Pujols homered in his first game in Baltimore, C.J. Wilson allowed one run in seven innings, and the Los Angeles Angels had a season-high 17 hits in a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

Held hitless by the Orioles during a three-game series on the West Coast in April, Pujols promptly doubled in his first at-bat against Brian Matusz. Then, in the fifth inning, the slugger ripped a 1-0 pitch into the inviting left-field seats to stake the Angels to a 3-0 lead.

Pujols has now homered in 33 ballparks off 282 different pitchers.

"It's just a testament to what a career he's had," teammate Mark Trumbo said. "He sure didn't wait very long. Best hitter in this era."

If Pujols was impressed with the feat, he apparently had no desire to talk about it. Long after the game ended, he still hadn't arrived at his locker.

Los Angeles finished with a season-high four homers. Peter Bourjos, Trumbo and John Hester also connected for the Angels, who have won 12 of 16 overall and 12 of their last 13 road games.

"This park is always been a park where the ball flies," manager Mike Scioscia said. "In this park you just have to put it in your mind there are going to be home runs. It's a nice offensive park."

It hasn't been that way lately for the Orioles, who were held in check by Wilson (9-4). The left-hander gave up six hits, struck out two and walked two to improve to 5-0 in seven starts since May 18. Wilson has a 1.30 ERA over that span.

"My sinker was great the first couple of innings and then just checked out of the hotel. It was going to Toronto I guess," he joked. "We had to adjust on the fly."

Steve Pearce and Wilson Betemit homered for the Orioles, who have lost five of seven. Baltimore has scored a total of 11 runs over those seven games. The Orioles went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and are 2 for 41 in that situation over their last eight games.

"You have to take the positive out of it. We keep getting ourselves into position, we just need to hit," center fielder Adam Jones said. "We've left some guys on base, we had the opportunity to score more runs, and we didn't. But we had the opportunity. We have to bear down, get in scoring position and get that hit. It's not easy."

Matusz (5-9) allowed five runs and a career-high 13 hits in five-plus innings. He has lost four straight starts, and on each occasion failed to get out of the sixth inning.

"It's been just a couple pitches here and there each game," the left-hander said. "It's just being able to eliminate the mistakes and get back on track."

Pujols hit his team-high 18th double with two outs in the first inning but was stranded. In the second, Los Angeles had runners at second and third with two outs before Hester hit a fly ball to the warning track in left.

The Angels broke through in the third, going up 1-0 when Mike Trout led off with a double and scored on a single by Torii Hunter.

In the Los Angeles fourth, Erick Aybar inexplicably tried to score from first on a two-out single to center by Hester and didn't get near the plate before being tagged out by Matt Wieters.

After going hitless over the first three innings, Baltimore used two singles and a stolen base to put runners at the corners with one out in the fourth. The next two batters, however, failed to hit the ball out of the infield.

Pujols homered in the fifth after Hunter singled. Pearce connected in the bottom half, the first homer off Wilson in eight starts since May 12, but Baltimore couldn't add on after getting runners to second and third with one out.

Bourjos chased Matusz in the sixth with a two-run drive, and Trumbo hit a shot in the seventh off Tommy Hunter that traveled an estimated 448 feet.

Hester homered off Kevin Gregg in the eighth, and Betemit connected with a man on against Jason Isringhausen in the bottom half.

NOTES: Pujols has 11 homers and 34 RBIs in 38 games since May 15. ... Hester finished with a career-best three hits. Howie Kendrick also had three hits. ... Jones stole third base in the fourth inning, Baltimore's first steal in 18 games since June 5. ... In the series finale Wednesday, the Angels will send Jered Weaver (7-1) to the mound and the Orioles will start Jason Hammel, who's 4-0 at home and 8-2 overall. ... Los Angeles is 35-19 since a 6-14 start. ... Aybar extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Neurons that control overeating also drive appetite for cocaine

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have zeroed in on a set of neurons in the part of the brain that controls hunger, and found that these neurons are not only associated with overeating, but also linked to non-food associated behaviors, like novelty-seeking and drug addiction.

Published in the June 24 online issue of Nature Neuroscience, the study was led by Marcelo O. Dietrich, postdoctoral associate, and Tamas L. Horvath, the Jean and David W. Wallace Professor of Biomedical Research and chair of comparative medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

In attempts to develop treatments for metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, researchers have paid increasing attention to the brain's reward circuits located in the midbrain, with the notion that in these patients, food may become a type of "drug of abuse" similar to cocaine. Dietrich notes, however, that this study flips the common wisdom on its head.

"Using genetic approaches, we found that increased appetite for food can actually be associated with decreased interest in novelty as well as in cocaine, and on the other hand, less interest in food can predict increased interest in cocaine," said Dietrich.

Horvath and his team studied two sets of transgenic mice. In one set, they knocked out a signaling molecule that controls hunger-promoting neurons in the hypothalamus. In the other set, they interfered with the same neurons by eliminating them selectively during development using diphtheria toxin. The mice were given various non-invasive tests that measured how they respond to novelty, and anxiety, and how they react to cocaine.

"We found that animals that have less interest in food are more interested in novelty-seeking behaviors and drugs like cocaine," said Horvath. "This suggests that there may be individuals with increased drive of the reward circuitry, but who are still lean. This is a complex trait that arises from the activity of the basic feeding circuits during development, which then impacts the adult response to drugs and novelty in the environment."

Horvath and his team argue that the hypothalamus, which controls vital functions such as body temperature, hunger, thirst fatigue and sleep, is key to the development of higher brain functions. "These hunger-promoting neurons are critically important during development to establish the set point of higher brain functions, and their impaired function may be the underlying cause for altered motivated and cognitive behaviors," he said.

"There is this contemporary view that obesity is associated with the increased drive of the reward circuitry," Horvath added. "But here, we provide a contrasting view: that the reward aspect can be very high, but subjects can still be very lean. At the same time, it indicates that a set of people who have no interest in food, might be more prone to drug addiction."

Suspect Arrested In 1997 Slaying Of Former East Hartford Resident In Florida

In March, Fred Parlante of East Hartford went to Broward County, Fla., with the intention of telling the detectives working on his mother's 15-year-old murder to step aside and let the FBI's cold-case agents take over the dormant case.

"They showed me the boxes of evidence,'' Parlante recalled Saturday. "They didn't want to let it go.''

Last week, Parlante, an ex-boxer and retired truck driver, got the call he'd been waiting for since his mother, Olga Parlante, 71, a former East Hartford resident, was killed during a robbery in her Dania Beach, Fla., apartment in 1997.

"'Fred, we're going to make an arrest,''' Parlante quoted Broward Sheriff's Department Detective Frank Ilarraza as saying over the telephone.

A convicted felon named Bennie Hall, who has a history of robbery arrests, was charged on Thursday with first-degree murder in Olga Parlante's death.

"I was in seventh heaven; what a relief," said Parlante, 67.

Crime-scene investigators at the time of the homicide collected fingerprints and palm prints from the walls of the apartment, the inside of Olga's pocketbook and a dresser drawer. But the prints never matched a suspect; in any case, the database couldn't accept palm prints.

With the case stalled, Fred Parlante said, he consulted with psychics and hired private detectives.

"I pressed for 15 years,'' he said.

But it all led nowhere ? until now.

Recent advances in the huge national database of crime-scene prints made it possible for investigators to submit palm prints ? and the Broward County detectives hit pay dirt.

A palm print lifted from a wall in Olga Parlante's apartment in 1997 matched a print on file from Hall, who was serving time for other crimes in the Martin County, Fla., jail.

Officials told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that Hall, 44, had been convicted of robberies against elderly victims inMiami-Dade County.

He will be charged in the killing of Olga Parlante, who was known throughout Broward County as the "Bingo Queen'' for her habit of playing the region's bingo halls nearly every day.

"The database grows, and the computer technology keeps improving year after year," Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti told the Sun-Sentinel. "It doesn't matter how long it takes: We're going to get justice for the family, and this case is a perfect example of this."

Fred Parlante echoed those sentiments Saturday.

"I am so happy we were one of the first new cases,'' he said. "Not only for this family, but, God forbid, for the next family that can be helped by this technology. Losing a mother or a father ? that is the hardest thing in the world."

Olga Parlante moved to Florida in the mid 1960s with her husband, Anneo, who was suffering from emphysema. Olga drove tractor-trailers and worked as a waitress, Fred Parlante said. Anneo Parlante died about 10 years later, and Olga went on with a life filled with her grandchildren ? and bingo.

On March 13,1997, Parlante, who was living alone in her apartment Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale, was beaten, strangled with a blouse and dragged back into the home when she tried to crawl away, the Courant reported at the time. Stolen during the killing: a 20-inch television set, radio with cassette player, mantel clock and $53.

Her body was discovered by a granddaughter, who needed counseling after the ordeal.

Service dog a lifesaver for child with diabetes, autism | Wichita Eagle

Brianna Bertrand huffs and puffs, blowing into her dog Cyrus? face.

The scene playing out is not that of an 8-year-old playfully tormenting her pup.

It?s of life and death.

Cyrus is a medic-alert service dog trained to detect when Brianna?s blood sugar levels are dangerously low or high. He does so by smelling her breath and skin.

Doctors diagnosed Brianna with Type 1 diabetes last year.

Juvenile diabetes is difficult for any child, with the constant finger pricks and insulin shots and the counting of every carbohydrate, but it is particularly so for Brianna.

Brianna is autistic and can?t communicate when she doesn?t feel well. She has never told her parents, Dana and Joe Bertrand, when her tummy hurt or her ear ached.

But on March 2, 2011, Dana Bertrand could tell from Brianna?s behavior that she wasn?t feeling well. The doctor thought the girl had a virus. While at the appointment, Dana Bertrand also mentioned to the pediatrician, Elaine Harrington at Via Christi Clinic, that Brianna had been drinking a lot of water, waking her parents up at night for more.

Harrington ordered a urine test, and Brianna and her mother left afterward. They were down the road a ways when the doctor?s office called and asked them to come back to do a blood test. It revealed Brianna?s blood sugar levels were too high, and Brianna went straight to the hospital, where she spent the next four days.

That day just happened to be Dana Bertrand?s birthday.

Brianna now takes insulin injections at least four times a day. Her family checks her blood sugar levels day and night.

So does Cyrus.

If the yellow Labrador retriever senses Brianna's blood sugar level is low or high, he alerts her parents. Her parents then test Brianna.

If her blood sugar level is lower than 80 or higher than 200, Cyrus gets a treat for being right ? a 5-calorie mini Milk-Bone. That?s the only time he gets a treat.

On an average day, he gets four treats.

Dana Bertrand tears up when she talks about what Cyrus means to her family, which includes son Kenneth, 11, who also is autistic.

?I am very thankful for him and how he?s affected Brianna,? she says of the dog, adding that not only does Cyrus help the family manage Brianna?s diabetes, he also helps calm Brianna.

And he provides companionship for a girl who says little to anyone except ?Are you OK?,? a question she can?t answer herself.

A 24/7 job

Brianna showed symptoms of autism when she was 2, her mother says. She flapped her hands, developed repetitive behaviors and didn?t play with toys like other children.

She didn?t speak at all until she was 4 or 5.

Doctors told the Bertrands that Brianna was autistic when she was 4.

Her brother is considered high-functioning in terms of autism, but Brianna?s autism is considered moderate to severe. She shows more ?classic? symptoms of autism.

Kenneth will be in the sixth grade this fall at Andover Central Middle School. Brianna was enrolled in special-education classes, but her mother has home-schooled her the past year because of her diabetes.

Keeping Brianna?s diabetes in check is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week job. Cyrus sleeps in Brianna?s room to monitor her.

Her blood sugar levels are checked before every meal and two hours after every meal and throughout the night. Nurses come to the Bertrands? Andover home to help provide respite care.

?There?s no sleeping through the night anymore,? Dana Bertrand says. ?That?s been very tough.?

But having Cyrus, who was trained at CARES (Canine Assistance, Rehabilitation, Education and Services) in Concordia, has helped, she says.

The Bertrands knew about and had seen service dogs for people who are blind. But they had never heard of a medic-alert service dog like Cyrus.

A speech therapist in Derby told the Bertrands about dogs trained to detect blood sugar levels. Harrington, Brianna?s doctor, thought such a dog would be helpful and wrote a recommendation.

?Brianna is a child who can?t communicate and can?t communicate effectively,? Harrington said. ?To have a dog who can pick up on whatever little slight change Brianna does just before she needs some attention is great ? before it becomes a catastrophe or a major issue.?

She said Cyrus, because of his calm nature, also helps keep Brianna calm for blood checks and injections.

?That family has been through a whole lot,? Harrington says. ?He can ease some of that. Dogs just have a sixth sense that we can?t explain.?

'Such a good fit'

Children?s Miracle Network Hospitals at Via Christi Health and the Butler County Community Developmental Disability Organization helped the Bertrands pay the $2,500 fee to get a service dog.

?Any opportunity we have to help a family out and ease their financial burden?? that?s our whole mission ? to help sick and injured kids,? said Jill Bosley, director of development for Children?s Miracle Network Hospitals at Via Christi Health.

This past March, the Bertrands got Cyrus, who will be 2 in September, after a weeklong training session for the whole family.

?The first day was a really neat experience,? Dana Bertrand recalls. Trainers brought out dogs to their new families one at a time. There were four people with diabetes who were matched to a service dog.

?It was amazing the connection and how they were such a good fit,? she says, fighting tears. ?It was a pretty emotional week.?

Cyrus doesn?t bark when he senses something is amiss with Brianna.

Instead, he comes to Brianna?s mother or father with his ears upright, staring. Sometimes, he whimpers.

?If Cyrus comes into our room at night, my husband and I know we need to go check on her,? Dana Bertrand says.

When Brianna?s blood sugar levels are off, ?he?s on her and he doesn?t let her out of his sight.?

Cyrus, who wears a vest and badge identifying that he is a service dog, goes everywhere with Brianna. Most people have been supportive, Dana Bertrand says, but some have questioned whether Cyrus is just a regular pet. A fast food restaurant in New Mexico, where the family recently went on vacation, wouldn?t allow Cyrus to come inside, even though service dogs are allowed in public places under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bertrand says she?s also had to explain to the grocery store where she shops that Cyrus is allowed to go wherever Brianna goes.

Cyrus recently saw ?Madagascar 3: Europe?s Most Wanted? at the movie theater. The family joked about whether they should put 3-D glasses on him.

The Bertrands hope that Cyrus will help Brianna be as independent as possible as she grows older.

?It is so important that he goes everywhere with her,? Dana Bertrand says. ?There are times we think she?s fine, and he has shown us that she?s not fine and that is huge.?

Iranian general: Military strike would be the end of Israel

A high-ranking Iranian general said on Saturday Israeli military action against Iran?s nuclear program would lead to the collapse of the Jewish state, Fars news agency reported.

Last week?s round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers in Moscow failed to secure a breakthrough, heightening fears Israel might take unilateral military action to curb Iran?s nuclear activities.

The two sides agreed to a follow-up meeting of technical experts on July 3, saving the process from outright failure.

?They cannot do the slightest harm to the (Iranian) revolution and the system,? Brigadier General Mostafa Izadi, deputy chief of staff of Iran?s armed forces, told Fars.

?If the Zionist regime takes any (military) actions against Iran, it would result in the end of its labours,? he added.

?If they act logically, such threats amount to a psychological war but if they want to act illogically, it is they who will be destroyed.?

Izadi?s comments are an apparent response to Israeli Vice Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz?s calls for tougher sanctions against Tehran and his indication that military action was still an option.

Analysts say Iranian officials use such rhetoric as a way of stoking Western concerns of chaos in the Middle East and the disruption of oil supplies in the event of military action.

During negotiations in Moscow the six powers - the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany - demanded Iran scale back its nuclear work and, in particular, stop enriching uranium to levels that could bring it close to making an atom bomb.

The demands included the shutting down of the Fordow underground uranium enrichment facility and the shipping of any stockpile out of the country.

In return, they offered fuel to keep Iran?s medical isotope reactor running, assistance in nuclear safety and an end to a ban on spare parts for Iran?s ageing civilian aircraft.

Iran denies its work has any military purpose and says the powers should offer it relief from sanctions and acknowledge its right to enrich uranium before it meets their demands.

Do you think Iran would use nuclear weapons if attacked by Israel?
