Feeding limbs and nervous system of one of Earth's earliest animals discovered

Thursday, February 28, 2013

An extraordinary find allowing scientists to see through the head of the 'fuxianhuiid' arthropod has revealed one of the earliest evolutionary examples of limbs used for feeding, along with the oldest nervous system to stretch beyond the head in fossil record.

Until now, all fossils found of this extremely early soft-bodied animal featured heads covered by a wide shell or 'carapace', obscuring underlying contents from detailed study.

But a new fossil-rich site in South China has been found to contain arthropod examples where the carapace has literally been 'flipped' over before fossilisation ? allowing scientists to examine the fuxianhuiid head to an unprecedented extent.

The study, published today in Nature, highlights the discovery of previously controversial limbs under the head, used to shovel sediment into the mouth as the fuxianhuiid crawled across the seabed, millions of years before creatures emerged from the oceans.

Scientists say that this could be the earliest and simplest example of manipulative limbs used for feeding purposes, hinting at the adaptive ability that made arthropods so successful and abundant ? evolving into the insects, spiders and crustaceans we know today.

Using a feeding technique scientist's call 'detritus sweep-feeding', fuxianhuiids developed the limbs to push seafloor sediment into the mouth in order to filter it for organic matter ? such as traces of decomposed seaweed ? which constituted the creatures' food.

Fossils also revealed the oldest nervous system on record that is 'post-cephalic' ? or beyond the head ? consisting of only a single stark string in what was a very basic form of early life compared to today.

"Since biologists rely heavily on organisation of head appendages to classify arthropod groups, such as insects and spiders, our study provides a crucial reference point for reconstructing the evolutionary history and relationships of the most diverse and abundant animals on Earth," said Javier Ortega-Hern?ndez, from Cambridge's Department of Earth Sciences, who produced the research with Dr Nicholas Butterfield and colleagues from Yunnan University in Kunming, South China. "This is as early as we can currently see into arthropod limb development."

Fuxianhuiids existed around 520 million years ago, roughly 50 million years before primordial land animals crawled from the sea, and would have been one of the first examples of complex animal life ? likely to have evolved from creatures resembling worms with legs. Arthropods were the first jointed animals, enabling them to crawl.

Fuxianhuiid arthropods would have spent most of their time grazing on the sea floor, using these newly discovered limbs to plow sediment into their mouths. They could probably also use their bodies to swim for short distances, like tadpole shrimps.

The fossils date from the early part of the event known as the 'Cambrian explosion', when life on Earth went from multi-cellular organisms we know very little about to a relatively sudden and wide spread explosion of diverse marine animals - the first recognisable evolutionary step for the animal kingdom we know today.

"These fossils are our best window to see the most primitive state of animals as we know them ? including us," said Ortega-Hern?ndez. "Before that there is no clear indication in the fossil record of whether something was an animal or a plant ? but we are still filling in the details, of which this is an important one."

While still a mystery, theories about the cause of the 'Cambrian Explosion' include possible correlations with oxygen rises, spikes in oceanic nutrient concentration, and genetic complexity reaching critical mass.

But the new site in South China where these fossils were found could prove to be key in uncovering ever more information about this pivotal period in the history of life on Earth. The Xiaoshiba 'biota' - that is the collection of all organisms preserved in the new locality - in China's Yunnan Province is similar to the world-famous Chengjiang biota, which provided many of the best arthropod fossil records to date.

"The Xiaoshiba biota is amazingly rich in such extraordinary fossils of early organisms," said Ortega-Hern?ndez. "Over 50 specimens of fuxianhuiids have been found in just over a year, whereas previous areas considered fossil rich such as Chengjiang it took years - even decades - to build up such a collection."

"So much material is so well preserved. There's massive potential for Xiaoshiba to become a huge deal for new discoveries in early animal evolution".

Actress Carrie Fisher briefly hospitalized after bipolar episode

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, was briefly hospitalized due to her bipolar disorder, the actress' spokeswoman said on Tuesday after video emerged of Fisher giving an unusual stage performance.

The video came from a show Fisher gave aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean last week, according to celebrity website TMZ, which posted the clip.

The clip shows Fisher, 56, singing "Skylark" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," at times appearing to struggle to remember the lyrics. Fisher also appears to use paper to clean up after a small dog that shares the stage with her, and then stuffing the paper into a couch behind her.

"There was a medical incident related to Carrie Fisher's bipolar disorder," Fisher's spokeswoman Carol Marshall said in a statement. "She went to the hospital briefly to adjust her medication and is feeling much better now."

The actress has previously discussed her struggle with bipolar disorder. And in her 2009 memoir "Wishful Drinking," she also described her alcoholism and drug abuse.

Fisher is the daughter of Hollywood stars Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and, aside from starring in the first three "Star Wars" films, wrote the bestselling novel "Postcards from the Edge" about an actress recovering from drug addiction. She wrote the screenplay for a 1990 movie adaptation.

She in recent years had a recurring role on the animated comedy "Family Guy" and has guest starred in a number of other television shows.

Search called off for missing saliboat

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) ? The Coast Guard on Tuesday called off the search for a boat that reportedly sank in rough seas far off the Central California coast with two adults and two children on board, saying the family's frantic distress calls could have been a hoax.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz said crews found no debris and no physical signs of distress after searching for nearly 48 hours.

Crews have been looking for the family by sea and air since receiving their first distress call Sunday afternoon.

The boaters said their 29-foot sailboat, which might have been called "Charmblow," was taking on water and their electronics were failing.

The boat had no working GPS system, but investigators used its radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey, where strong winds, cold water and big swells made for perilous conditions. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of high swells in the area.

An hour later, the family members reported they had to abandon the boat and were trying to make a life raft out of a cooler and life-preserver ring. The Coast Guard then lost radio contact.

Investigators determined from the broken distress calls that the family included a husband and wife, their 4-year-old son and his cousin, Coast Guard Lt. Heather Lampert said. The agency received no reports about a family missing at sea.

On Monday, the Coast Guard released one of the recorded calls in hopes that it would lead to new information from the public that could help in the search.

In the crackling recording, a man's voice is heard saying, "Coast Guard, Coast Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship."

Lutz said earlier Tuesday there was nothing on the distress call such as laughter that would spark suspicion, and he did not think it was particularly unusual that the man on the call sounded calm.

"You never really know how someone is going to handle it," Lutz said. "Some people are a lot calmer than others."

Coast Guard Executive Officer Noah Hudson in Monterey said it's always difficult to call off a search.

"It's tough for me thinking that we had four people out on the water who were in need of rescue and to think there might have been loss of life in this case is tragic."

But if it was a hoax, "it's unfortunate that we were forced to use so many resources for so much time," Hudson said. He did not know how much money had been spent on the search efforts.

Titanic undertaking: Classic ocean liners coming back

Just over a century after the Titanic sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic, an Australian billionaire has officially floated plans to build a successor.

On Tuesday, Clive Palmer, chairman of Brisbane-based Blue Star Line, revealed blueprints for Titanic II, a ?full-scale re-creation? of the illustrious, if ill-fated, ship at a press conference on the Intrepid Air, Sea & Space Museum in New York.

Set to sail in 2016, the ship is one of several ? the QE2 and SS United States are among the others ? that seek, in one or way or another, to recapture the glory days of the great ocean liners and ensure that their legends live on.

First up: Titanic, or more precisely, Titanic II, a modern-day version of the ship that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912. During today?s press conference, Palmer referred to the original as a ?ship of dreams? and its successor as a ship ?where dreams come true.?

As envisioned, that dream entails building an 883-foot-long, 55,800-ton vessel with space for 2,435 passengers. That?s small by today?s standards ? the Queen Mary 2 measures 151,000 tons; the Oasis of the Seas, 220,000 tons ? but big enough to offer a casino, gymnasium and other features reminiscent of the original.

In other nods to the past, passengers will wear period clothing from 1912 and be able to book passage in first, second or third class.

"It will be 98% the same," Palmer told the BBC last year. Presumably, the other 2% will apply to the welded (not riveted) hull, the modern propulsion system and the addition of enough lifeboats to preclude problems with things that go bump in the night at sea.

While Palmer declined to discuss the cost of the ship, other ocean liner aficionados have expressed doubts about the viability of the project ever since the idea was first floated last year.

?It?s like a Disneyland representation of the Titanic,? said maritime historian Peter Knego. ?You can?t build with wood anymore, you can?t rivet, you can?t do all the things that made the Titanic what she was.?

Nor, says Knego, can you ignore the fact that the vast majority of today?s cruisers prefer ships with waterparks, climbing walls and other resort-style amenities. By comparison, interest in transatlantic crossings, like the ones Titanic II is expected to begin making in 2016, went into sharp decline the moment Pan Am and BOAC began flying jets across the pond in 1958.

?There?s probably a couple thousand people in the world who?d be fascinated by a transatlantic crossing on a replica of the Titanic,? Knego told NBC News. ?It would also have to compete against the Queen Mary 2 and there are times that the QM2 isn?t even full.?

Original ships, alternative uses
While Titanic II seeks to turn back the clock to the glory days of the ocean-liner era, proof that time doesn?t stand still sits, rusting and peeling, at a dock in Philadelphia. Originally launched in 1952, the SS United States was as famous in its day as the Titanic was 40 years earlier but without the morbid associations.

?It?s the most famous ship that didn?t sink,? said Susan Gibbs, executive director of the SS United States Conservancy, which seeks to preserve the vessel. ?It?s still with us and is by many accounts one of the most storied U.S. liners ever built.?

That story, much condensed, goes like this: Entering transatlantic service in 1952, the ship immediately became the unofficial flagship of the U.S. fleet, recognizable for its knife-like bow and red, white and blue funnels. She broke the transatlantic speed record on her maiden voyage and holds the westbound record for fastest passenger service to this day.

?When she was built, she represented the country,? said Knego. ?People were aware of her like they?re aware of the space shuttle now.?

Alas, the subsequent rise of transatlantic jet service essentially killed the market for transatlantic sailings and the ship was taken out of service in 1969. Since then, it?s had several owners, been stripped of its fittings and avoided several dates with the scrapyard.

Since 1996, the ship has sat at the dock in Philadelphia, its hull streaked with rust and its red, white and blue funnels faded to shades of pink and gray. The good news is that the ship is structurally sound and asbestos-free; the bad news is that carrying costs (maintenance, insurance, etc.) average $75,000 per month.

?That?s a heavy lift and one that can?t be borne indefinitely,? said Gibbs, who, it turns out, is the granddaughter of the ship?s designer, William Francis Gibbs. Scrapping the ship remains a threat, ?but everyone involved will work their hearts out to avoid that fate,? she told NBC News.

Those efforts include a grassroots campaign called SaveTheUnitedStates.org and and plans to turn the ship into a waterfront attraction with hotels, retail outlets and a museum dedicated to the ship, 20th century design and the American ingenuity that underscored it.

According to Gibbs, discussions have been undertaken with several municipalities that might host the ship with New York being the most likely venue: ?It was the ship?s homeport during its service career; it attracts a lot of tourists, and it?s a bustling city with high hotel occupancy rates.?

The effort would not come cheap but it?s also not without precedent. The first Queen Mary has been a dockside hotel/tourist attraction in Long Beach, Calif., since the early 1970s, although, it, too, has faced a series of financial setbacks.

More recently, the Queen Elizabeth 2, or QE2, which has been sitting idle in Dubai since 2008, was sold to Oceanic Group, a Singaporean company that plans to turn it into a hotel/attraction in an as-yet-unnamed Asian city.

Given the above, it?s clear that these grand old ships have incredible appeal just as there?s no denying that their futures are marked by ocean-liner-sized question marks. For Clive Palmer, it?s about recapturing the essence of one iconic vessel; for Susan Gibbs, it?s about ensuring that the essence of another isn?t lost forever.

For his part, Peter Knego has his own wish: ?For people who appreciate classic skyscrapers and old movie theaters, scrapping the United States would be like demolishing the Empire State Building,? he told NBC News. ? If only (Palmer) would invest in the ship instead of recreating one that never completed its maiden voyage ...?

Powers wait to hear Iran response to nuclear offer

ALMATY (Reuters) - World powers hope Iran will respond positively on Wednesday to their new offer to lift some sanctions if Tehran scales back nuclear activity the West fears could be used to build bombs.

The United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia presented the offer when their first meeting with Iran in eight months began in Almaty on Tuesday and the Islamic state was considering it, the powers' spokesman said.

Western officials described the first day of talks as "useful". One said Iran discussed specific aspects of the powers' ideas in bilateral talks with three of them - Russia, Germany and Britain - but gave no indication how Tehran viewed them.

Iranian state television described the atmosphere in the discussions as "very serious".

The outcome of the two-day meeting in the Kazakh city will be closely watched in Israel, which has strongly hinted that it could attack Iran's nuclear sites if diplomacy and sanctions fail to stop the uranium enrichment program.

Iran says Israel's assumed nuclear arsenal is the main threat to peace and denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make atomic bombs. It says it is only aiming to produce nuclear energy so that it can export more oil.

In their latest attempt to break years of deadlock in the dispute, the powers are offering Iran a relaxation of some of the sanctions that are taking a heavy toll on its economy.

"Hopefully the Iranians will be able to reflect overnight and will come back and view our proposal positively," the spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represents the powers in the talks, said.

"The ball is in their court," Michael Mann added after the first day of discussions on Tuesday.

He did not give details of the offer, but other Western officials have confirmed it includes some limited sanctions easing if Iran closes a underground site where it carries out its most controversial uranium enrichment work.

Diplomats and analysts see scant chances of a conclusive deal with Iran before a June presidential election, with the political elite preoccupied with domestic issues.

Wednesday's talks are due to start at around 11 a.m. (0500 GMT).

IRANIAN COUNTERPROPOSAL

Iran would put forward its own proposal "of the same weight" as that of the other side, a source close to the Iranian negotiating team said on Tuesday, but Western officials said it had not done so during the first day of negotiations.

Iran, whose chief negotiator Saeed Jalili is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is a veteran of Iran's 1980s war against Iraq and the Western powers that backed it, has shown no sign of willingness to scale back its nuclear work.

It argues that has a sovereign right to carry out nuclear enrichment for peaceful energy purposes, and in particular refuses to close its underground Fordow enrichment plant, a condition the powers have set for any sanctions relief.

Tightening Western sanctions on Iran over the last 14 months are hurting Iran's economy and slashing oil revenue. Its currency has more than halved in value, which in turn has pushed up inflation.

But analysts say the sanctions are not close to having the crippling effect envisaged by Washington and - so far at least - they have not prompted a change in Iran's nuclear course.

Western officials said the powers' offer would include an easing of restrictions on trade in gold and other precious metals if Tehran closes Fordow.

The facility is used for enriching uranium to 20 percent fissile purity, a short technical step from weapons grade.

Western officials acknowledge an easing of U.S. and EU sanctions on trade in gold represents a relatively modest step. But gold could be used as part of barter transactions that might allow Iran to circumvent financial sanctions.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman last week dismissed the reported incentive as insufficient and a senior Iranian lawmaker has ruled out closing Fordow, close to the holy city of Qom.

Technical Omissions Will Not Be Used to Set Aside Non-Judicial ...

As a matter of first impression, the California Court of Appeal recently issued a decision in Shuster v. Bac Home Loans Servicing, LP, holding that the omission of a trustee from a deed-of-trust does not preclude enforcement of non-judicial foreclosure? pursuant to the deed-of-trust.

Facts of the Case:

In 2006 the homeowner-borrowers purchased a home in Simi Valley California.? The deed-of-trust designated Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems (?MERS?) as the beneficiary but did not designate a trustee under the deed-of-trust.

In 2010, when the homeowners defaulted on the home loan, MERS designated Recon Trust as the Trustee.? At the foreclosure sale, the Trustee sold the property to a third party purchaser.

The homeowner brought an action for cancellation of the foreclosure deed and for wrongful foreclosure.? The homeowners alleged that they had a right to set aside the sale, primarily because the deed-of-trust failed to designate a trustee.? The homeowners asserted that because of this omission the deed-of-trust was transformed into a ?mortgage? that could only be foreclosed through judicial foreclosure.? Here, the home had been foreclosed through a non-judicial foreclosure/trustee?s sale.

The trial court dismissed the lawsuit finding that the complaint (that had been amended twice) did not state facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action.

Holding:? The Court of Appeal affirmed the trial court?s dismissal of the homeowner?s complaint, finding that the omission of the trustee from the deed-of-trust did not prevent enforcement of the deed-of-trust. ?Dismissal of the complaint was also proper because the complaint did not allege tender of the amounts due under the loan (although other recent case law brings this requirement into question).

Takeaway:? The Court was keen on following the reasoning of other state cases that rejected similar arguments made by homeowners.? Here it appears that courts may strive to reject these types of ?technical error? arguments in order to set aside a foreclosure sale.? Specifically, the Court stated, in issuing its holding, that the hardship of foreclosure will not became a haven for those who do not appear to make any good faith effort to resolve the issue, but instead attempt to seek shelter behind ministerial omissions.

3rd GE Global Innovation Barometer survey underlines ... - AME Info

The UAE is one of only two countries in the region where the study was conducted, highlighting GE's commitment to the country, which has identified innovation, knowledge and sustainable development as key drivers of its growth.

The only Arab country classified as an innovation-driven economy by the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report 2012-13, the UAE is ranked 24th out of 144 globally in overall competitiveness.

In all 3,000 executives from 25 countries were surveyed with 73% of the respondents in the country stating that innovation, marked by improvement of products and services, had contributed to stronger business performance in the past.

Nabil Habayeb, GE's President & Chief Executive Officer for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said: "In its third year now, the GE Global Innovation Barometer underlines the strategic importance that businesses in the UAE place on innovation. Quite significantly, UAE businesses demonstrate their openness to partnerships to drive innovation, with 88% of the respondents stating that their firms are increasingly looking at innovating through partnerships."

He added: "In other significant findings, UAE businesses feel that the government and public authorities are allocating an adequate share of budget to support innovative companies. A majority of the respondents, at 86%, state that SMEs and individuals can be as innovative as large corporations, highlighting the success of the UAE in promoting the SME sector, which contributes significantly to the non-oil GDP. The findings complement GE's growth approach to the UAE, where we are focused on building business partnerships, knowledge sharing and human capital development, which the country's business executives identify as key drivers to innovation."

Power of Collaboration

An overwhelming 91% of UAE respondents said they would be more successful at innovation through partnerships than by going about it alone - four points more than the global average of 87%.
? The UAE executives said partnerships are important to enter new markets (80%), access new technology (79%), speed up time to market (78%) and improve an existing product or service (75%)
? 72% said collaborations will help their businesses in benefiting from the partner company's sales force - 14 points higher than the global average
? Barriers to collaborative innovation, according to UAE respondents, are lack of protection of confidentiality/IP (58%) and lack of trust in partner companies (43%)

Innovation as Driver for Growth
81% of the UAE respondents said that understanding customers and anticipating market evolutions is the most important ability needed by businesses to innovate successfully
? 81% believe innovating on improving products and services will drive business performance
? Respondents said developing new technology (70%), creating an environment conducive to innovation (69%), and mining data inside and outside the company (62%) are key abilities businesses have to muster to innovate successfully
? 62% said localized innovation to meet domestic needs will play a key role in driving business performance

New Business Models and Talent Development
Reiterating the growing emphasis that UAE businesses place on innovation, the survey identified that 54% of the executives believe creating new business models is important to boost performance.
? 62% said attracting and retaining innovative people is another key driver for innovation
? While 58% of UAE business executives report that the country has a strong innovation-conducive environment, 54% expect decision-makers to encourage a stronger entrepreneurial culture in the education system through stronger linkages between students and business-savvy individuals
? 46% said creating financial environment that encourages the development of venture capital to support innovation is important

Although, UAE executives largely perceive innovation as a positive force and key economic driver, 45% of the respondents believe that with innovative practices creating more competition among businesses and making some products and services obsolete, it could have a negative impact on the economy in the long-run. This perception is shared by more business executives in the country than the global average of 30%.

This emerging "Innovation Vertigo" - an uneasiness with the changing dynamics of today's business landscape and uncertainty over the best path forward - is challenging leaders to think differently about how they will achieve growth. Many executives, however, seem to be embracing this complexity by exploring new and sometimes unexpected opportunities to innovate.

"Innovators must be resilient or risk being left behind," said Beth Comstock, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of GE.

"Change has become constant and we see leaders responding by betting big on more unconventional approaches to innovation to unlock growth. At GE, we are exploring different markets, partnerships structures and business models - all in the pursuit of uncovering new ways to better serve our customers and meet the world's biggest challenges head on."

The Barometer was commissioned by GE and conducted by independent research and consulting firm StrategyOne to explore how business leaders around the world view drivers and barriers to innovation and how those perceptions influence strategy.

My Calendar Has Gotten Smarter In Really Dumb Ways

google calendarWhen I travel to the East Coast, I sometimes feel like I'm living in a time warp, as my iPhone and Google Calendar keep notifying me about meetings that had happened three hours earlier. I've already mentioned this problem on TechCrunch, in a post about the launch of smart calendar app Tempo, where I?blamed the issue on "my apparently idiosyncratic way of dealing with timezones." (In case you were wondering: I do my best to ignore timezones entirely, and if I'm traveling between zones, I put things on my calendar based on the local time of wherever I'll be on a given day.) And I can't deny that I'm pretty haplessness when it comes to using any productivity tool that's more complicated than email.

Economy will grow, but slowly in 2013, experts say

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Business economists expect 2013 will be another year of sub-par growth for the U.S. economy, reflecting uncertainty stemming from the budget battles in Washington and Europe's on-going debt problems. But they think the economy will improve as the year progresses and by 2014 will grow at the fastest pace in nine years.

In its latest survey of top forecasters, the National Association for Business Economics said it expected the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, to expand at an annual rate of 2 percent this year, slightly worse than last year's lackluster 2.2 percent growth.

For 2014, however, the NABE forecasters believe the economy will be growing at a rate of 2.8 percent, which would be the best performance since 2005. The GDP, the economy's total output of goods and services, shrank in 2008 and 2009 as the country went through the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since then economic growth has been modest as the economy has been held back by a variety of factors including prolonged unemployment.

The latest quarterly forecast from NABE is based on responses from 49 forecasters gathered from Jan. 28 through Feb. 5. On growth, it represented a slight downgrade from the survey released in December which forecast the economy would grow 2.1 percent this year.

The NABE panelists were pessimistic about the effects the budget battles in Washington would have on growth. Nearly all felt growth would be reduced this year, given the uncertainty surrounding the budget. One-half of the panelists felt the drag would shave less than one-half percentage point from growth while one-third put the drag at between one-half and a full percentage point knocked off growth this year.

The panelists saw the economy strengthening as the budget uncertainty is resolved. They forecast growth in the second half of this year would average above a rate of 2.5 percent and get stronger next year.

"While the NABE forecasters see fiscal threats, they are optimistic that there will be some resolution toward the second half of this year and that will result in an improvement in many of the numbers is 2014," said Nayantara Hensel, an economics professor at the National Defense University in Washington and a member of the NABE forecasting panel.

The next budget deadline will occur Friday when across-the-board spending cuts totaling $85 billion, known as a sequester, are scheduled to go into effect.

Congress and President Barack Obama averted the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of December with a deal that allowed tax rates to rise on individuals making more than $400,000 and families making more than $450,000 per year. That deal also allowed the temporary 2 percentage point cut in Social Security payroll taxes, which was in effect for two years, to expire.

The tax increases in the fiscal-cliff deal, especially the rise in Social Security payroll taxes, will mean slower growth this year. It will mean that a worker earning $50,000 annually will see his Social Security tax go up by $1,000.

That will slow consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The NABE panel forecast consumer spending will rise at an annual rate of 1.9 percent this year but will accelerate in 2014 to a growth rate of 2.5 percent.

The NABE panelists were also pessimistic about Europe's on-going budget troubles, which have hurt the U.S. economy by cutting into export sales. Over one-third of the panelists said they believe Spain will need a larger bailout package this year and one-fourth think that on-going debt troubles in Italy will force that country to take bailout support as well.

"The problems in Europe and our own domestic fiscal drama will keep the investment outlook subdued," said Kenneth Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America and a member of the NABE panel.

Among other predictions in the latest NABE survey:

?Unemployment, currently at 7.9 percent, will decline slowly to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7 percent by the end of 2014, with average monthly job growth of 170,000 this year and 193,000 in 2014.

?Inflation will remain modest at around 2 percent, giving the Federal Reserve leeway to keep a key short-term interest rate at a record low near zero this year and in 2014.

?New home construction, which is finally rebounding after the housing bust, will jump 25.6 percent this year and another 17.3 percent in 2014, pushing construction next year to 1.15 million homes.

How to Write Articles That Go Viral | Social Media Today

Writing for social mediaWhat does it take for something to go viral? Have you ever written an article that got a ton of shares on social media sites? If you haven't, you're going to learn 10 tips for writing content that will increase the likelihood of your posts going viral on social media. If you have, you'll be able to review these ideas and potentially further improve your writing in order to provide yourself with even more exposure, visibility, and popularity around the subject and topics your're trying to introduce. By understanding the key concepts that will be listed below, you'll likely be a force to be reckoned with in social media! ?

1. Understand Market Trends in Social Media

You should always check out what topics are hot on social media. You might be writing an article about a product, service, fiction or nonfiction. Regardless of what it is, it will need to be relevant today, or on the verge of being important tomorrow. Most people do not want to read about something they already know about. Quite frankly, people try to avoid this type of content because they feel it is simply rehashed in order to tell them the same thing already done before to game some search engine traffic. There are excellent tools available like Twitter Trends and Google Trends that will help you understand market buzz, and by using these resources - you can try to write relevant information based on what is popular today, or likely to be tomorrow. Also learn when is the best time to publish a blog postbased on your target market. ?

2. Write Longer In-depth Content

In a study of the New York Times' most emailed list, data showed that longer content is more likely to get shared. This doesn't mean you need to stuff your content with filler, but obviously the more context provided by you, the more valuable the piece becomes to others. One of the most popular ways to write a long effective article that goes viral on social media is to write a story. In fact, if you can make it a long engaging story, or how-to guide providing educational value, these always turn out to be really well liked. People simply love when a person delivers them a story they are passionate about. People also like to be presented a series of content or chapters if you will. In other words, you should deliver a part of your story once a week, or once every two weeks. This will allow those that are interested to share this interest with their friends and guide them to your blog, forum, or posting network to find out more about what your tale is all about and build up more hype. You can use a tool like Storify to bring in rich content from your articles and other reactions across social media. wordcount?

3. Choose an Effective Title and Keywords

Based on the information you've discovered in your market trends and tools like Google Keywords, you'll want to choose effective keywords that will help people find the articles you write. These keywords will guide targeted relevant traffic to those articles. By choosing the right type of keywords, you will effectively bring people to your articles that are willing to share them on their social networks. Also having a killer title?is important to bait users into clicking on your article. This is extremely effective if you are writing about social subjects which people simply love to search for and share. ?

4. Understand Keyword Density

Do not try to overcrowd your articles with keywords simply because you want to draw in traffic. If you practice this method, you may find out that you will have the reverse effect. Most search engines and people on social networks will do everything possible to avoid this type of content. Your content must read naturally, with feeling, and give the person reading it a reason to share it with their friends on their respective social media network (sort of taking ownership of your articles views publicly). ?

5. Make Your Content Interesting and Emotional

Always make your content unique to help draw more people. Speak to the audience not yourself. When writing for social media, you never want to write duplicate content that people can find somewhere else. This simply gives you a bad reputation, and people will not return to read anymore of your content. In fact, they will be less likely to share your content which is what's needed to go viral in the first place. Also think about creating and mixing in interesting new content like pictures, infographics, videos or other rich media people love to see on social media. Also one of the best ways of going viral is to tap into people's emotions triggered by high energy responses caused by feelings of awe, anger and anxiety. It's like with Howard Stern where the people that hated him listened to him longer than his fans, just to see what he'll say next. emotions in conent?

6. Allow Your Content to be Easily Skimmed

According to Nielson, users have time to read at most 28% of the words during an average web page visit; where 20% is more likely. Use a thumb image at the top of your articles to make the opening passage easier to digest and encouraging your readers to continue reading further. ?

7. Don't Stuff Your Content With Keywords

Keyword stuffing and keyword density is almost considered the same thing. However, it's not. Keyword density is when the keyword is found too close to another. Keyword stuffing is when you have the same keyword mentioned over and over again in the same article. Most intelligent readers do not want to read articles that contain the same word over and over again. Pay attention to what you're writing so you can build interest which translates into your article going viral. Virality happens in an instant by sparking interest on social media, not from gaming search engines which lead to a slower accumulation of traffic anyways over a longer period of time. ?

8. Under Promise and Over Deliver on What You're Writing About

If you are writing about issues that plague the Third World, write about issues that plague the Third World. Do not begin writing about a particular subject and then do the switch and bait and begin writing about a product or service. Let your audience know what you're going to write about and then give them 10 times the information they planned on receiving. Make your first point as strong as your last. Under promise and over deliver and your articles will go viral on social media. People crave interesting and useful content. practical utility helps virality?

9. Share That @#$&

Get your post out there to as many relevant social networks and communities as possible. Recently we took a look at creating multiple entry points into your content by sharing on the major social networks and importantly niche communities like Social Media Today?to help build buzz around your great content. You also need to make sure your articles have optimal sharing buttons and cool images attached making it easy for people to share your work. ?

10. Ask For Feedback

Lastly, you'll want to test your article to make sure it is worthy content. You can do this by sending your article to several individuals that you trust for a little constructive criticism. This helps to ensure that you aren't writing something that is completely boring for other people to read or with errors. Also ask your audience for feedback. One of the greatest ways to build traction and engagement with your content is to get your audience involved. You now have 10 tips to create articles that go viral on social media. By utilizing these strategies on a consistent basis, you will find that your content will not only go viral, but may even be picked up by some larger news outlets only adding fuel to your fire.

Based on rule #10, I have to end this with a question or I'd be breaking my own set of rules :) However, I'd be really interested to hear about what type of strategies you might be using to successfully go viral on social media?

Monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe could destroy lake's ecosystem

Monster goldfish found:?Scientists are worried that an increasing number of monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe are stimulating algae growth.

By Associated Press / February 22, 2013

Gigantic goldfish, like this one held by University of Nevada, Reno, researcher Christine Ngai, have been found in the waters of Lake Tahoe.

Biologists with the University of Nevada, Reno say they're finding a growing number of giant goldfish in the lake.

While officials have been working for years in trying to keep the lake's water crystal clear, researcher Sudeep Chandra told KCRA-TV (http://bit.ly/Yo0lIn?) the discovery of the goldfish is particularly worrisome because goldfish eat a lot and excrete "lots of nutrients."

Those nutrients stimulate algae growth.

The goldfish, some of which have grown to 18 inches, could also eat smaller fish, creating new competition for native trout.

Chandra says with no prior studies on goldfish for guidance, researchers are catching the giant goldfish and bringing them back to their lab to study.

It's not clear how the goldfish got into Lake Tahoe, but it's believed to be from people dumping aquariums into the lake.

Majority of U.S. citizens say illegal immigrants should be deported

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than half of U.S. citizens believe that most or all of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants should be deported, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday that highlights the difficulties facing lawmakers trying to reform the U.S. immigration system.

The online survey shows resistance to easing immigration laws despite the biggest push for reform in Congress since 2007.

Thirty percent of those polled think that most illegal immigrants, with some exceptions, should be deported, while 23 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be deported.

Only 5 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States legally, and 31 percent want most illegal immigrants to stay.

These results are in line with other polls in recent years, suggesting that people's views on immigration have not changed dramatically since the immigration debate reignited in Congress last month, according to Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

"It's not Americans' views that are shifting. It is that the political climate is ripe for this discussion," after the November election when Hispanics voted overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic President Barack Obama, she said.

"Democrats feel that the time is right to capitalize on their wins and Republicans feel that they had a bad blow and are eager to reach out to Hispanics," she added.

Polls show that most Americans back immigration reform, although they often have different ideas of what that means, with some people favoring looser immigration laws while others want to see greater border security.

A group of eight U.S. senators are working on a bipartisan deal to enact immigration reform, the first major attempt since a similar overhaul died in Congress six years ago.

The senators' proposal calls for a full path to citizenship for illegal immigrants once they pay back taxes and a fine and wait in line behind others applying to become Americans.

A plan by Obama has similar provisions, but the senators want any move to relax immigration laws dependant on boosting security on the southern border.

ISSUE POLARIZES POLICYMAKERS

Attitudes toward immigration are polarized by party, according to another the Reuters/Ipsos poll. Seventy-five percent of Republicans think all or most immigrants should be deported, compared to 40 percent of Democrats who think the same.

Republican Senator John McCain, one of the eight senators in the group, had his own encounter with citizens angered by illegal immigration on Tuesday when residents of his state of Arizona complained bitterly at a town hall meeting about the lack of security on the border with Mexico.

One man asked why troops had not been deployed to the border.

"Why didn't the army go down there and stop them? Because the only thing that stops them I'm afraid to say, and it's too damn bad, is a gun," the man said,

Another resident, Keith Smith, got into a testy exchange with McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate whose views on immigration have fluctuated over the years.

"Cut off their welfare and all their stuff and they'll go back," Smith said, referring to undocumented workers.

McCain had been trying to explain his position: "You're not telling these people the truth. They mow our lawns, they care for our babies, they clean . . . that's what those people do," he said.

The Arizona lawmaker, whose position on immigration hardened during the 2010 midterm elections before softening again, is a key part of the Republican side of the senators' bipartisan immigration effort.

Wednesday's Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted Friday through Tuesday and surveyed 1,443 Americans over the age of 18.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online poll is measured using a credibility interval. In this survey, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

HDR mode to Android camera apps made possible by CyanogenMod

The CyanogenMod crew just announced that they have finally merged the HDR or High Dynamic Range functionality into the CM 10.1 camera app today. HDR is a process which makes multiple images of shots to be merged to produce a single photo called a panorama. This technique is widely used when a scene contains both bright and dark areas. It is also useful to add some funkiness to an image.

CyanogenMods version of HDR uses 3 images, one at minimum exposure and the other two at neutral and maximum respectively. It requires a very fast shutter speed as it is trying to capture 3 photos. The camera is needed to remain still as possible to avoid blurriness and disrupted perspectives. New cameras which have zero lag shutters are suited for this feature. For those who have lesser hardware specs, a tripod could be useful to capture an excellent quality image.

It is not just the capturing of three photos, the cpu should also be fast enough to stitch together those 3 photos into one. Ofcourse, CyanogenMod also added an option to users to delete the 3 photos taken after they are merged to save storage capacity.

The HDR feature is not working on Aries based devices but the team is already working for a solution.
